I do believe that you are already familiar how LCD display screen
works, well, maybe not. But I'm pretty certain that you have seen one
with your own eyes. You know that they are flat and lightweight. They
also have black color flat screen and pretty stand. What is behind that
pretty black screen?
As a matter of fact, both of those types LEDs
and LEDs use very same technology for image reproduction. They have
liquid crystal cell that is placed between two polarized filters through
which current flows from one to another. Main difference here is type
of backlight that is used for illuminating liquid crystals. LCDs use
cold cathode fluorescent lamps for illumination, while LEDs use diodes.
In fact, when talking about LEDs, we may
say that there are three different types of illumination used for image
reproduction. We have RGB LED displays which use three different diodes
(red, green and blue) for illuminating every single pixel on the screen,
then we have two types of LED displays that use white diodes for
illumination - Edge LED use white diodes that are placed around the rim
of the monitor and Direct or Full Array LEDs that have white diodes
aligned all over the panel matrix.
When we want to compare LCD vs
LED monitor, we could say that in this case they are pretty similar with
no major advantages for one or another type of display screens as
computer monitors are mostly Edge LEDs. As they are based on same
technology, they produce similar image quality, black levels and have
similar color gamut. Main difference is in power consumption where LED
monitors use less electrical power. Also, LEDs are brighter than LCDs as
they have better contrast ratio. Since price is almost the same these
days it is pretty much up to you to decide as picture quality, color
intensity and sharpness divers from one device to another.
Conclusion:
When selecting computer monitor, LCD vs LED technology and image
quality are pretty much the same and it depends mostly of particular
model and manufacturer quality.
On the other hand, when we want to
compare LCD vs LED displays that are used for high definition TVs, in
case that you shell out more cash and purchase Full Array LED screen you
will get better black level, contrast and brightness than purchasing
LCD screen. Well, when you take a look at the price tag in this case you
should compare LED vs Plasma. In my personal opinion I would take
plasma instead of LED.
Of course, both plasma and LED displays
have their advantages and disadvantages, but in case that you are
willing to spend around $1000 for living room TV, then plasma is better
deal.
Conclusion: When looking for large display screen for your living room, it is better to go for plasma if you have cash to spare.
